September Currently

I'm back with my September Currently! I'm linking up with Farley at Oh Boy Fourth Grade! So here it goes!!

LISTENING: To Jake and the Neverland Pirates...because I have kids and they will sit through it while I cook dinner, and do other things :)

LOVING: That my baby took a 3 hour nap today. Okay so he's not really a baby. He's 2.5. But he didn't get a nap the past two days, and has been a cranky mess today. So, I'm glad he was able to sleep, and I got a lot of quality time in with my 6 year old. :)

THINKING: About how I needed to go to the school today. To grab some assessments, to put up some things, to make copies, etc....And then I left my key at home, and I live 40 minutes away from my school. :/ Oh well, at least we got home for nap time :).

WANTING: A 3 hour nap myself. I'm always so tired the first of the year.

NEEDING: To do laundry. Self-explanatory. It's ENDLESS........and I don't know why. How can 4 people wear so many clothes??!

TRIPS: The Pacific Northwest, Ireland, and Canada. I've been fortunate to see pretty much all of our wonderful country, but I've never been out to the PNW. The farthest northwest I've been to is Nebraska. I've heard it's absolutely gorgeous out there so I can't wait to take a trip.

Canda- Because I've never been there, and it's just so stinkin' close. Isn't it a shame that I haven't visited??! Relatively speaking. I live in Arkansas so I'm not THAT close, but to go out of the country it's close and I would like to go. I've SEEN Canada across Niagara Falls, but that is as close as I've gotten.

Ireland- I'm Irish, and I'd like to go see what's over there. My aunt took an amazing genealogical trip following our family history, and traveling where our ancestors lived. She came back with awesome pictures, and I'd like to see some of that stuff too. :)

So that's it for me! What are you thinking about this September??

The First Two Weeks of School!

The first two weeks of school are over for me, and I am exhausted. I really needed this 3 day weekend! :) I have a very challenging class this year, and I'm not sure HOW I'm going to get these babies where they need to be by May. It's going to be a challenge, but one I am up for, and one I will conquer. :) Let's go over the breakdown shall we?!

13 students (I am SO lucky!)
5 girls
8 boys
2 name writer's
2 kid's that know 95% of their alphabet
11 kid's that know less than 5 letters
13 kid's that know 0-2 sounds

WHAAA??!! I know I'm so lucky to have only 13 kids, but thank the sweet Lord that I ONLY HAVE 13 KIDS! Because I'm going to need as much one-on-one time as I can possibly get with these babies.

After I did a few assessments I went home and cried. It is going to be such a challenge to get these kids reading where they need to be by the end of the year. I know they will be, but it's going to be a challenge. On the plus side, they are much more mathematically minded. Not a lot. But a little. So we are really going to have to focus on their reading skills. Lots of repetition, and the use of some amazing packets from amazing teachers. I LOVE TpT, and teacher bloggers. It has made me such a better teacher! There's not going to be a day to spare with these kids, but that's okay. We have the first two weeks under our belt, and we are about to GET. AFTER. IT. :)

So, the first two weeks have been full of procedures, and routine building. We have done a lot of anchor charts, and been introduced to math manipulatives. The first week I used pretty much all of the activities from Babbling Abby's Crazy for Kinders pack! It was SO fun! This was the first year I've used it, and I know I'll use it again! :) In math we worked on position words, and my kids nailed it! :) We also were introduced to our math journals. We also used Growing Kinders Alphahero's packet to get introduced to the alphabet. I'm covering 1 letter per day. I'm hoping to introduce them fast and furious, just to get them introduced to them all. I know with this group I'll be working on our alphabet recognition and sounds a lot in small groups, but this seems like a good start to me. I want to have all of my students to know their letters and sounds by November 1. Not possible for all of them, I know, but possible for most. I hope. Fingers crossed.

The second week of school we started in on our "normal" routine. We started our calendar books, and poetry journals as well. We worked better in our math journals, and we began writer's workshop! In math we worked on sorting this week, and we used Cara Carroll's ABC pack to shake up our alphabet routine. We also talked about our families this week, and worked on rhyming words. We still have to work on rhyming words. ;) One thing that I was really proud of my kids for was how hard they worked during writer's workshop. Which, in the past had always been one of my hardest routines for my littles to master. They love to talk. However, we were able to work 7 minutes quietly!! That's huge for the second week of Kindergarten!! :)  Last week was a really good week in all! I absolutely LOVE my kids this year. They have the best personalities! All of them are so sweet, and polite. It's going to be a WONDERFUL year! :)

And can I just tell you I was so busy I forgot to take pictures! I took maybe 3, and you can find them on Instagram. I'm kmvarnell in case you were wondering. :) I'll get better at this whole documenting thing! :) How were your first two weeks of school!?? I've got a super fun week planned for week 3. I'm hoping to be back tomorrow sometime to share my lesson plans! :)

June Currently!

Hello currently peeps! I don't think I've done once since last July...whoops! I'm going to try to do better this year with my blog. I really want to just document what we do weekly, and I did NOT do a good job at that this year, but there's always next year! :) So, here is my currently for the month of June! Enjoy!! :)

Listening: To Curious George. Did I mention that I'm alone? Lol! My kids are both napping/resting and I got busy on my computer, and just left the TV running...How many of you moms and dads have done that?! All of you! Good, I knew I wasn't alone ;).

Loving: That I don't have anywhere I HAVE to be right now. The only thing I HAVE to do today is take my daughter to gymnastics tonight. Which I forgot about until I wrote that I don't have to do anything today! Lol. And I have to feed my children. Of course. :)

Thinking: About what to do this summer. My husband and I decided that we were going to have a low key summer this year. We have been so busy this year, we NEED to just be still more. I'm also thinking about next year. It's impossible to turn my teacher brain off, but I think I've got my theme all narrowed down. I'm also going to have the biggest class I've ever had before. 22 little kiddos are going to be knocking on my door come August! I'm trying to think about time and material management the most!

Needing: To go grocery shopping. Mostly because the two little people who call me Mom have been running around the house asking to eat all day long, because they are BOTH going through growth spurts (cuz that's what you get when both of your kids are born in the same month) , and because I haven't been shopping in a week! We are heading out as soon as the baby wakes up! :)

Summer Bucket List: Our big plan is to relax. Yes, we will go swimming, and to the zoo, and do a lot of the summery things that you'd expect. But, we are also going to do a lot of just nothing! I will be potty training my son this summer, which is one reason we are going to stay at home more this summer, but also because I want to soak up every bit of the 6 and 2 year old that I have living in my house right now. They are changing so so quickly. I just want all of the time I can with them! :)

So that's it for me! What's in store for your June??

Kindergarten Graduation Song!

Why hello there! My school year is over, and I am just now able to get this up! It has been a crazy school year, but it ended on a sweet note! How many times did you hear "Let It Go" this year? I heard it no less than once a day, but most of the time it was more like 10! Ha! We were practicing for our Kindergarten Graduation, and my kids were just not loving the finale song I had picked out. At. All. My daughter whined out during graduation practice one day! "Mrs. Tina (yep, she called me Mrs. Tina at school:)) why can't we sing Let It Go for graduation??" My response, " Because it has nothing to do with moving on to first grade!!" Then later that night, well, why can't it have something to do with moving on to first grade? With my minimal music training I poured every ounce of my soul out, and in a little under an hour I had written my masterpiece! :) My only reservation was that I only had 8 days until graduation, and wasn't sure my kids could learn all of the lyrics. I decided to try it out, and I told them that if we couldn't learn all the words then we would have to do our old song. They. Loved. It. AND learned all the words in TWO days, AND rocked it out at graduation! :) I was so, so proud of them! Our graduation was May 27th, and I wish I could have posted this before the end of school was out, but maybe you can file this freebie away for next year! :) You can grab a copy HERE for FREE from my TpT store! If you use it next year I'd love to see a little video! I'm going to try to post my kids performance in the next week! Happy Summer friends!! :)
